The minimum browser requirements for which this site is tested are Safari 2, Firefox 2 and Internet Explorer 7.

Unicode compliant

To properly view this site which uses characters from the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), the Devanagari script and the Indological transliteration of the Devanagari script, your browser must be Unicode compliant. In addition, Extended Latin, Phonetic and Devanagari Unicode fonts must be installed on your computer. To learn more on browsers and Unicode support, read Tom Gewecke and Alan Wood’s instructive pages.

Extended Latin Unicode fonts

The Roman transliteration from the Devanagari script uses characters that are included under Latin Extended-A (range: 0100-017F) and Latin Extended-B (range: 0180-024F). You can download the code chart for Latin Extended-A and Latin Extended-B from the Unicode website. The characters are present in the ANSI character set or ‘core fonts’ and in Microsoft’s WGL4 set of Pan-European characters. Mac OS X also supports Extended Latin Unicode fonts fully.

Phonetic Unicode fonts

The phonetic characters used here are included under Unicode’s IPA Extensions (Range: 0250-02AF). Click here to download the code chart from the Unicode website. The list of Windows fonts currently available for download is available on the IPA in Unicode page authored by John Wells. I recommend the Doulos SIL Unicode IPA font, which can be downloaded for free from the SIL Software Catalog page. For IPA Unicode keyboards, click here.

Nepali Unicode fonts

Devanagari characters are included under Unicode’s Devanagari (range: 0900-097F). Windows users can install the Kalimati Unicode font, which has been released thanks to the initiative of Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya (MPP). The font can be downloaded for free from the MPP’s download page either separately or as part of the Unicode font package for Windows 2000 and XP only. Mac users are adviced NOT to install the Kalimati Unicode font. Mac OS X has the built-in Devanagari MT font.
