Here is a simple way to convert a Microsoft Word document with non-Unicode fonts like Preeti, Kantipur, etc to a text file with Unicode on Mac OS X.

Tools Needed
  • TextEdit (TextEdit is a simple, open source word processor and text editor, that is distributed with Mac OS X)
  • ConversionTool from Madan Paraskar Pustakalaya for converting Nepali text in non-Unicode fonts like Preeti, Kantipur, JagHimali, Kanchan and Himali etc. to Unicode compatible fonts and vice versa.

In TextEdit
  • Open the Word document with TextEdit.
  • Select Format > Make Plain Text (shift-command-t).
  • Hit OK to convert the file.
  • Select Save as (shift-command-t).
  • Name the the file and save it with File Format: Western (Windows Latin 1).

In ConversionTool
  • Start ConversionTool.
  • Open the text file you just save as Western (Windows Latin 1).
  • Select Input Encoding ISO-8859-1.
  • Select Output Encoding Unicode-16.
